Greece and Egypt to expand EEZ delimitation agreement

Greece and Egypt have agreed to resume consultations to expand their 2020 Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) delimitation agreement. Following a telephone conversation between Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerogretis and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, the two nations aim to extend the geographic scope of their existing maritime boundaries.

The 2020 agreement provided for a partial delimitation between the 26th and 28th meridians, recognizing the influence of Greek islands such as Crete, Karpathos, and Rhodes. The new discussions seek to address areas east of the 28th meridian, including the waters around Kastellorizo, which were previously excluded to avoid friction with Turkey.

This diplomatic move serves as a direct response to the Libyan House of Representatives' ratification of the 2019 Turkey-Libya maritime memorandum. Both Athens and Cairo expressed categorical opposition to the memorandum, emphasizing that all maritime delimitations must strictly adhere to international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
