Greece and France coordinate on Mediterranean energy project

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and French President Emmanuel Macron met in Paris to coordinate efforts regarding the electricity interconnector project between Greece and Cyprus. This major energy initiative in the Eastern Mediterranean follows the French investment group Meridiam taking control of the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) company. The project receives 657 million euros in funding from the European Commission.

The energy project faces opposition from Turkey regarding maritime rights and permits in the waters between Greek and Cypriot islands. In a separate address during ceremonies in Kastelorizo, Mitsotakis issued a message to Turkey, stating that while Greece seeks dialogue and avoids conflict, it will not accept threats or interference in its sovereign rights and territorial integrity.

During the discussions, Mitsotakis also raised concerns regarding the impact of the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz on energy prices and called for European Union initiatives to address rising costs. The leaders also touched upon broader developments in the Middle East and Iran.
