Greece and Israel conduct joint naval exercises in the Mediterranean
Greece and Israel have conducted a series of highly symbolic joint naval exercises in the Eastern Mediterranean. The drills, which were initially held under strict secrecy, involved two Greek frigates and two Israeli missile boats. The operational scenarios focused on high-difficulty tasks, including identifying and responding to maritime threats, search-and-rescue operations, anti-submarine warfare, and managing emergencies to improve interoperability between the two navies.
These maneuvers occur amid heightened regional tensions. Separately, Egypt, Greece, Cyprus, France, and Italy have launched the ‘Medusa-15’ joint military exercise involving naval, air, and special forces.
In response to the shifting security landscape, Turkey has announced its own major naval exercise, ‘Denizkurdu-I’, scheduled for September 20 to 24, 2026. This Turkish exercise will span the Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea, and Eastern Mediterranean, featuring the amphibious assault ship TCG Anadolu. Turkish officials have emphasized that the Eastern Mediterranean should be an area of cooperation rather than tension.
