Greece and Israel are set to sign a major defense agreement in Tel Aviv on Monday, August 31, for the Achilles Shield program. This multi-layered air and missile defense project is valued at approximately 3.1 billion euros.

The program aims to create a unified defense umbrella by integrating existing Greek systems, such as Patriot and drone countermeasures, with Israeli technologies. Key components include Rafael’s Spyder for low-altitude threats, IAI’s Barak MX for medium-range threats, and David’s Sling for ballistic missiles. The architecture will utilize artificial intelligence to detect, categorize, and respond to threats, including drones and UAVs.

A critical aspect of the deal is the inclusion of Greek industrial participation, which is expected to exceed 700 million euros (25% of the project) involving roughly 12 Greek companies. Additionally, the Greek Armed Forces will receive access to the software's source code to ensure operational control over electronic subsystems. The project is scheduled to be operationally ready within 35 months, with systems delivered in stages.
