Greece and Italy implement new road traffic regulations
New road traffic regulations in Greece and Italy are introducing stricter rules for drivers and pedestrians to enhance safety.
In Greece, the new Highway Code (Law 5209/2025) mandates polite behavior from drivers toward pedestrians and other motorists. It also extends this obligation to drivers of taxis, buses, and tourist vehicles regarding their passengers. Violations involving aggressive or antisocial behavior can result in a 150 euro fine and a 40-day driver's license suspension. While the law does not list specific forbidden words or gestures, authorities will evaluate the context and severity of the behavior.
In Italy, new regulations target pedestrian safety. Pedestrians are prohibited from using mobile phones, tablets, or other electronic devices while crossing the street, except in emergencies; violations carry a 75 euro fine. Pedestrians must also ensure drivers have noticed them before crossing and must avoid sudden movements. Additionally, those walking on roadways outside inhabited areas must wear reflective gear at night or in low-visibility conditions such as tunnels, fog, or snow.
