Greece and Italy to sign agreement for two Bergamini frigates
Greece and Italy are set to sign an Implementing Arrangement in Rome on September 8, 2026, to finalize the acquisition of two Italian FREMM-class Bergamini frigates. The agreement, which will be signed by the Greek Ministry of National Defense and the Italian Ministry of Defense, formalizes the legal, financial, and technical terms following a Memorandum of Cooperation signed in September 2025.
The two vessels, the Carlo Bergamini (F-590) and the Virginio Fasan (F-591), are scheduled for transfer to the Hellenic Navy during the first half of 2028 and the first half of 2029, respectively. The deal includes provisions for initial and ongoing operational support to ensure the ships' availability.
A key component of the agreement is the involvement of the Greek defense and shipbuilding industry, which will participate in maintenance work and the adaptation of new systems on the frigates. The acquisition is part of a broader modernization program for the Greek Navy, which also includes FDI frigates and the modernization of MEKO-class vessels, aimed at securing sovereignty in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. The arrangement also allows for the potential acquisition of two additional ships in the future.
