Greece and Japan strengthen maritime and shipbuilding ties

Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Vassilis Kikilias met with Japan’s Minister for Economic Security and Development Strategy Minoru Kiuchi at the Port of Thessaloniki. The meeting coincided with the opening of the Thessaloniki International Fair, where Japan is the guest of honor.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in shipping, shipbuilding, and port management. Kikilias noted the long-standing ties between the two nations, highlighting that Greek shipowners consistently rank second in orders from Japanese shipyards due to their high quality and expertise.

Key topics included increasing mutual investments, enhancing cooperation between the respective Coast Guards, and addressing the decarbonization of the shipping industry. Kikilias also briefed Kiuchi on the strategic role of the Port of Thessaloniki, including its expansion projects and the growth of the cruise sector in the region.
