Greece signs deal for Embraer KC-390 military transport aircraft

Greece has signed an intergovernmental agreement with Portugal to procure three Embraer KC-390 Millennium military transport aircraft, with an option to purchase three additional units. The contract, valued at approximately 590 million euros, marks the first time the Greek Air Force will operate jet-powered military transport aircraft and aerial refueling tankers.

The KC-390 Millennium is a medium-sized jet capable of transporting troops, equipment, and cargo. A critical feature of this acquisition is its ability to perform aerial refueling, which will allow Greek fighter jets, specifically the Rafale and Mirage, to remain airborne longer or reach more distant mission areas. Compatibility with F-16 fighters is planned for subsequent years.

Under the agreement, Portugal acts as the formal seller and will provide logistical support, training, and maintenance through its existing experience with the aircraft. The first aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2027, with subsequent deliveries planned for 2029 and 2031. The deal also includes potential future cooperation regarding drone-related technologies to address hybrid threats.
