Greece to acquire up to six Embraer KC-390 aircraft

Greece has signed an intergovernmental agreement with Portugal to acquire three Embraer KC-390 Millennium military transport aircraft, with an option to purchase three additional units. The deal, valued at approximately €590 million, was finalized in Athens on November 2, 2026, in the presence of Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias and his Portuguese counterpart, Nuno Melo.

The acquisition marks a significant modernization for the Hellenic Air Force, providing Greece with its first jet-powered military transport aircraft and its first air-to-air refuelling capability. The KC-390s will initially support Rafale and Mirage fighter jets, with F-16 integration expected approximately one year later. This capability is intended to extend the time combat aircraft can remain airborne by providing mid-air fuel replenishment.

The first aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2027, with subsequent deliveries planned for 2029 and 2031. Under the agreement, Portugal will play a key role in training Greek crews and mechanics at the KC-390 Training Centre in Beja. This operation is expected to generate an industrial return of €33 million for Portugal. Greece becomes the seventh European nation to select the Brazilian-built platform, joining countries such as Portugal, Hungary, and the Netherlands.
