Greece and Türkiye face rising maritime and sovereignty tensions
Tensions between Greece and Türkiye have escalated due to conflicting maritime claims and sovereignty disputes in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis stated that conditions are not currently favorable for substantive talks that could lead to international jurisdiction at The Hague. Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis reiterated that the potential extension of Greek territorial waters to 12 nautical miles remains a unilateral right to be exercised at Greece's discretion.
Concurrently, Türkiye has intensified its rhetoric, driven by its 'Blue Homeland' doctrine, which seeks to assert control over maritime zones across the Black Sea, Aegean, and Eastern Mediterranean. This shift in stance challenges established post-World War I treaties and regional security architectures, heightening friction in the region.
