Greece and Turkey face rising Aegean tensions amid military buildup
Tensions between Greece and Turkey are escalating in the Aegean Sea over territorial waters, sovereignty claims, and Mediterranean influence. Both nations have engaged in heated rhetoric, with Greece citing Turkish airspace violations and illegal marine parks, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has demanded an end to the militarization of Greek islands.
In response to these threats, Greece is pursuing a strategy of deterrence through significant military upgrades. This includes a multi-billion euro defense agreement with Israel known as Achilles' Shield, which provides advanced air defense systems. However, a major obstacle remains: the United States maintains that Turkey's possession of Russian S-400 missile systems poses a security risk to sensitive F-35 technology, and legislative frameworks in the US link F-35 transfers to the removal of those systems.
