Greece expands rent refund eligibility and special benefits

A new Joint Ministerial Decision has been published in the Government Gazette regarding rent refunds in Greece. The measure expands eligibility by increasing income thresholds: the limit for single taxpayers rises from €20,000 to €25,000, while for married taxpayers it increases from €28,000 to €35,000, with additional allowances for dependent children.

A special provision offers a “double rent refund” for approximately 50,000 doctors, nurses, and educators serving in regional or remote areas. This group can receive retroactive assistance for 2024 rents without income criteria, followed by a second payment for 2025 rents. This could result in total benefits equivalent to up to four monthly rents for the 2024-2025 period. The maximum assistance is set at €1,600, plus €100 for each child.

Key deadlines include August 31 for submitting late E1 tax amendments to ensure lease details are correctly recorded. The first retroactive payments for the special category are expected by September 25, while general rent refunds are scheduled for completion by the end of November. Payments will be made via direct credit to IBANs registered with the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).
