Greece announces energy support measures for heating oil and diesel

The Greek government is preparing a new package of energy support measures to mitigate rising costs for households and businesses. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced a dual intervention aimed at heating oil, with the goal of keeping prices below 1.75 euros per liter starting October 15. This plan includes a direct subsidy at the pump and a horizontal increase in the heating allowance, which will cover various energy sources including natural gas and electricity.

Additionally, the government intends to extend the diesel subsidy through October. To further control costs, authorities are considering the reinstatement of profit margin caps for fuel retailers. Amidst geopolitical instability in the Middle East and disruptions to oil supplies, the government is also seeking flexibility from the European Union to allow these emergency energy expenditures to fall outside strict fiscal spending limits.

Economic discussions also highlight the gap between fuel prices and average Greek incomes, noting that while prices are not the highest in the EU, purchasing power remains a significant challenge. The government aims to implement these measures through targeted subsidies and refinery support to ease the financial pressure on citizens during the upcoming winter season.
