Greece announces new support measures for professional fishers

The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food has announced new support measures for professional fishers. In collaboration with the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, a fuel subsidy of 40 cents per liter for fishing diesel has been set for the months of September and October.

This follows previous increases where subsidies were doubled for the April–August period, reaching 32 cents per liter in April and May, and 24 cents per liter from June through August. These measures aim to mitigate the impact of high energy costs on fishing businesses.

Additionally, a new 15 million euro fund has been established to compensate coastal fishers for damage to their nets caused by protected marine species, such as dolphins, seals, and sea turtles. These funds were secured through the reallocation of resources from the ‘Fisheries, Aquaculture and Sea’ (PALYTH) 2021–2027 program.

Other ongoing initiatives include a 16 million euro program for vessel modernization, with an application deadline of October 16, 2026.
