Greece announces funding and migration management measures for Leros and Kos

Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum, Thanasis Plevris, has announced a series of measures and funding allocations for the islands of Leros and Kos to address the impact of migration and local infrastructure needs.

In Leros, 18 million euros have been allocated for various projects, including approximately 6 million euros to combat water scarcity through the construction of two modern desalination units. To improve local security and daily life, the Minister announced restrictions on the hours migrants can spend outside the Closed Controlled Facility, a move requested by local authorities. Additionally, contracts for temporary private-law employees will be renewed to ensure the facility's operation.

In Kos, the Minister inaugurated three new sports domes with a total funding of 1.7 million euros from the Solidarity Fund. He also noted that infrastructure projects exceeding 10 million euros have been approved to support the local community.

To decompress the migration facilities on both islands before winter, the government will utilize charter flights to repatriate individuals whose asylum requests have been rejected. The Minister also highlighted that voluntary returns, supported by financial incentives, have already exceeded 6,000 individuals.
