Greece announces major pension and social security reforms for 2027

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced a series of social security and pension reforms scheduled for implementation in 2027. These measures, presented at the Thessaloniki International Fair, aim to address long-standing issues following a decade of austerity-driven cuts.

Key reforms include the abolition of the 'personal difference' compensation for approximately 671,586 retirees, effective January 1, 2027. This change will allow annual increases to be fully integrated into pension payments. Additionally, the Retiree Solidarity Contribution (EAS) will be restructured into a progressive model, where the contribution is only applied to the portion of a pension that exceeds 1,468 euros.

To provide immediate relief, the government plans to distribute a 400-euro financial boost to 2.2 million retirees in November 2026. Looking toward 2027, pensions are projected to increase by between 2.6% and 2.8% based on economic growth and inflation metrics.
