Crete extends livestock protection measures against goat and sheep disease

The Region of Crete has announced the extension of immediate preventive measures to protect the island's livestock from goat and sheep plague. Although Crete remains free of the disease, the decision was made due to rising cases in mainland Greece and the high transmissibility of the virus, which can survive in the environment for up to six months.

The measures are in effect from Friday, October 16, until Thursday, October 29, 2026, at which point they will be reassessed. Key restrictions include:

• Animal movement: Movements for slaughter are permitted throughout Crete, but movements for breeding are strictly limited to the same Regional Unit. Movements for winter grazing are allowed within Crete under existing conditions. • Biosecurity: It is strictly forbidden to transport animals from different farms simultaneously. All movements require health certificates and certified, disinfected vehicles. Animals must undergo a 21-day quarantine at their destination. • Entry Ban: The ban on importing goats and sheep from the rest of Greece into Crete remains in place. • Farm protocols: Owners must ensure facilities are fenced to prevent unauthorized entry/exit and use disinfectant footbaths or mats at vehicle entrances.
