Greece announces permanent Christmas bonus for public employees

The Greek government has announced a permanent Christmas bonus for approximately 720,000 public sector employees. Starting in December 2027, employees will receive a gross annual allowance of 500 euros. Because the amount is treated as gross income rather than a tax-free boost, the net amount received will vary based on age, income level, and family status, typically ranging from 257 to 389 euros.

The allowance will be included in regular earnings and will count toward pensionable salary. The estimated annual fiscal cost to the state budget, including employer contributions, is approximately 433 million euros.

Additionally, public sector wages are expected to rise based on the minimum wage. The minimum wage is projected to increase from the current 920 euros to 1,000 euros by January 2028, following incremental increases scheduled for April 2027 and January 2028. This represents a gross monthly increase of 80 euros.
