Greece announces rent refunds for educators and healthcare workers

A new rent refund scheme has been introduced for thousands of educators, doctors, and nurses in Greece who rent housing away from their permanent residence to serve in regional areas. The program provides two payments this autumn.

The first payment covers retroactive rent from 2024 and is scheduled to be completed within September. The second payment covers rents paid in 2025 and is expected by the end of November.

Under this special regime, eligible individuals can receive a refund equivalent to two monthly rents per year, with a maximum annual amount of 1,600 euros. This limit increases by 100 euros for each dependent child. Unlike the general rent refund program, this special measure does not apply income criteria.

The process is automatic, requiring no application. Calculations are performed using data from tax returns and declared leases, which are transmitted to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE). For those who already received the general rent refund, the special aid will supplement the amount to ensure total support reaches two-twelfths of the annual rent.
