Greece announces support measures for professional fishers
The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food is implementing new support measures for professional fishers to reduce daily operating costs and modernize equipment. Deputy Minister Thanasis Kavvadas announced several key initiatives.
First, fuel subsidies for fishing oil will be increased. For September and October 2026, the subsidy will reach 40 cents per liter. For April and May, it will rise to 32 cents per liter (up from 16 cents), and for June through August, it will be 24 cents per liter (up from 12 cents).
Second, 15 million euros will be allocated to compensate coastal fishers for net damage caused by protected marine species, such as dolphins, seals, and sea turtles. This funding is provided through the EU's PALYTH 2021–2027 program.
Third, 16 million euros are available for investments in fishing vessels, with subsidies covering up to 85% of costs. These funds are intended to improve safety, working conditions, and vessel functionality without increasing fishing capacity. The deadline for applications has been extended to October 30.
