Greece announces major military restructuring and technology integration
Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias has presented the third and final phase of the 'New Force Structure' under the 'Agenda 2030' reform program. The restructuring aims to transition the Greek Armed Forces into a multi-domain operational model capable of addressing modern security threats through the integration of space, cyber, and electromagnetic spectrum capabilities.
A central component of the plan involves the merger or abolition of 56 military units and 126 structures or camps. This consolidation is intended to optimize personnel distribution, particularly by moving staff from under-strength units to frontline and border regions like Evros. The restructuring is estimated to generate annual savings of approximately 100 million euros, with a projected total of 530 million euros over five years. These funds are earmarked to be reinvested into military personnel, including improved remuneration and housing programs.
The reform emphasizes the integration of unmanned and autonomous systems across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Key developments include the creation of a Cyber Command, a Computer School, and specialized drone units, such as a drone brigade in Litochoro. Additionally, the plan outlines the development of national space capabilities, including various communication and observation satellites. For Navy personnel, a limit of 200 days at sea per year has been proposed, with double compensation for deployments exceeding this limit.
