Greece assumes UN Security Council presidency for October

Greece has assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for October. Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, announced a dense work program guided by the UN Charter and international law.

Key signature events include a high-level briefing on October 26 regarding children and armed conflict, chaired by Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis to mark the 30th anniversary of the mandate. On October 29, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will chair a session focused on emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, and maritime security.

The Council will also hold open debates on women, peace, and security on October 27 and the Middle East on October 15. Additionally, the presidency will oversee discussions on regional crises in Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, and Haiti, while managing the process for selecting the next UN Secretary-General.
