Greece automotive market sees surge in SUV and electric vehicle sales
The Greek automotive market is undergoing significant shifts in consumer preference, characterized by a surge in SUV popularity and a growing adoption of electric vehicles. Between January and August 2026, 102,420 new passenger cars were registered in Greece, with SUVs accounting for 66.1% of the market (approximately 67,700 units). This represents an increase from a 62% market share during the same period in 2025. The B-SUV segment emerged as the leading category, capturing 36.9% of the market.
Simultaneously, the market for fully electric vehicles is expanding. In August 2026, 546 electric cars were registered, a 27.6% increase compared to August 2025, despite an overall 37% decline in total passenger car registrations for that month. Consequently, the market share for electric vehicles rose to 10.6% in August 2026, up from 5.2% the previous year. For the first eight months of 2026, electric vehicle registrations reached 6,828 units, a 28.7% increase over the previous year. While growth is evident, Greece's electric vehicle market share remains below the European Union average, which stood at 20.7% during the first half of 2026.
