Greece bans travel in Argolis as fire risk spikes and winds top 100 km/h

On Sunday 21 June 2026, the Argolis regional governor issued a decree prohibiting all movement, camping and outdoor activities in designated forest and mountain zones of the prefecture due to a high fire‑risk level (category 3). The ban covers areas in the municipalities of Argos‑Mykines, Nauplion, Epidaurus, and Ermionida, including specific forests such as Farkam‑a, Melidoni, and Akros. An exemption was made for the EKŌ Rally Acropolis 2026 race route between Plataní and Gynó.

A day earlier, the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection warned of a “yellow alert” for fire danger in 11 regions, citing strong northerly winds expected to reach 8 Beaufort. Meteorological stations recorded gusts exceeding 100 km/h in the Aegean, with Paxiada Karystu reaching 107 km/h and Mariou Rethymnou 101 km/h, heightening the fire‑ignition threat across the country, especially in Argolis, Attica, Boeotia and several islands.
