Vouliagmeni beach dispute over sunbeds leads to death of 82-year-old

An 82-year-old retired naval officer died following a physical altercation over sunbeds at Vouliagmeni beach near Athens. The incident occurred on a Sunday morning when a dispute regarding available loungers escalated from a verbal argument into a confrontation.

Authorities have arrested a 76-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman in connection with the incident. The 76-year-old, identified as a primary suspect, has been charged with causing fatal bodily harm. He has since appeared before a magistrate and was released under restrictive conditions, including a requirement to report to a local police station monthly. The man denies striking the victim in the head, though he admitted to a verbal dispute and physical contact.

The 21-year-old woman, described as an accomplice, is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. Witnesses reported that the 82-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest during the scuffle and was subsequently pronounced dead at Asklepieion Hospital in Voula. A post-mortem examination has been ordered to determine whether the death was a direct result of physical injuries or a medical event triggered by the stress of the confrontation.
