Greece braces for high fire danger as strong winds sweep the country
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has placed much of Greece under heightened fire‑risk alerts for Saturday 1 August 2026. Sparta municipality is rated a very high fire‑risk (category 4), while a red‑alert (category 5) is in force for Attica and many other regions, including parts of the Aegean, Crete, Peloponnese and Central Greece.
Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis warned that north‑easterly and north‑westerly winds will intensify, reaching 8–9 bophor across much of the country and up to 10 bophor in places such as Crete. Gusts of up to 55 km/h are forecast for Patra, and the Meltemi winds dominate the central, eastern and southern Aegean. Temperatures are expected to stay within the seasonal range of 24‑33 °C, with isolated spots reaching about 37 °C.
Authorities urge residents to avoid any outdoor activities that could spark fires, to refrain from using open flames, and to report any fire sightings immediately. The strong, gusty conditions are expected to ease by Sunday midday, reducing the immediate threat but keeping fire‑danger zones on high alert.
