Greece calls for EU fiscal flexibility to tackle energy crisis
Greek officials and business leaders are calling for increased measures to combat rising energy costs. Deputy Foreign Minister Tasos Chatzivasileiou emphasized the need for European Union fiscal flexibility to help member states manage high energy prices, particularly ahead of the upcoming winter. He noted that Greece was a proponent of implementing a natural gas price cap.
Giannis Chatzitheodosiou, President of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, described recent government measures as a bittersweet development. While he welcomed the increase in the number of installments for overdue debts from 72 to 120, he warned that fuel subsidies may soon be offset by further price hikes. He also called for reductions in VAT and social security contributions to better support small and medium-sized businesses facing the energy crisis.
