Greece celebrates Assumption of Mary with island festivals and traditions

Greece is preparing for the August 15th feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a major religious and cultural event often referred to as the ‘Summer Easter’. In the Cyclades islands, celebrations are widespread. Tinos remains a primary pilgrimage site, with accommodation occupancy rates reaching approximately 95% as devotees arrive to honor the Panagia Megalochari.

In Paros, festivities center on the Panagia Ekatontapyliani, marking 1,700 years since the temple's traditional founding. Sifnos also observes the holiday through religious ceremonies and local festivals.

In Cephalonia, the holiday is marked by the unique tradition of the ‘snakes of the Virgin Mary’. In the villages of Markopoulo and Argiria, the appearance of the harmless Telescopus fallax species is viewed as a sign of divine protection. Local legend suggests these snakes once protected a monastery from pirates, a tradition that continues to draw local interest during the mid-August celebrations.
