August Full Moon Sturgeon Moon lunar eclipse cultural heritage archaeological sites

Greece is celebrating the August full moon, known internationally as the ‘Sturgeon Moon’, which coincides with a partial lunar eclipse. To mark the occasion, the Ministry of Culture has organized a large-scale cultural program for the 27th consecutive year.

Across the country, 126 archaeological sites, historical locations, monuments, and museums are participating. This includes 61 venues hosting organized events such as musical performances, theatrical shows, and guided tours, while another 65 sites remain open to the public with free admission during late-night hours.

Notable celebrations include a concert by the ERT National Symphony Orchestra at the Venetian Harbor of Nafpaktos, following the completion of restoration works on the 600-year-old monument. Other major events feature performances at the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio, the Minoan Palace of Malia, and various sites in Athens and Ioannina. In Athens, the Acropolis Museum has extended its operating hours until midnight to allow visitors to experience the site under the moonlight.
