Greece: Chios Airport closure concerns and Kalamata Airport management transition

The Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) for the Northeast Aegean has issued a unanimous resolution expressing concern over the planned four-month closure of Chios Airport. Scheduled from November 15, 2026, to March 15, 2027, for upgrade works, the suspension has raised questions regarding its impact on the island's 50,000 residents, local economy, and healthcare access. The TEE noted that while 85% of the project's implementation time has passed, financial progress stands at only 40%, leading to calls for full technical documentation and a clearer justification for the total shutdown.

In a separate development, Kalamata International Airport is officially transitioning to new management on November 9. The consortium managing the airport includes Fraport AG, Delta Airport Investments SA, and Pileas SA. The new management aims to modernize facilities and increase capacity under the slogan ‘Peloponnese closer to the world.’ This transition follows a period of significant growth, with international passenger arrivals in the first nine months of 2026 reaching 180,201, surpassing the total 2025 record of 169,730.
