Greece commemorates 34th anniversary of Thanos Axarlian murder

On July 14, 1992 a rocket attack by the terrorist group 17 November targeted Finance Minister Giannis Palaio­krassas in central Athens. The blast missed the minister’s armored car but killed 22‑year‑old student Thanos Axarlian, who was passing the scene, and injured several others. The incident marked the first time the group aimed at an active minister and sparked nationwide shock. In 2002 members of 17 November were arrested, tried and convicted for the killing.

Thirty‑four years later, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis posted on social media, “The ghosts of yesterday try to return… We are not afraid,” reaffirming the government’s stance against terrorism. Defence Minister Nikos Dendias also issued a statement, saying the memory of Axarlian and all victims of terrorism will be kept alive. The ruling New Democracy party released a similar message, emphasizing that the nation does not forget and will not be intimidated.

The commemorations serve as a reminder of the lasting impact of the 1992 attack on Greek society and the ongoing resolve to confront extremist violence.
