Kostas Karamanlis criticizes Turkey-Libya memorandum and Aegean strategy

Former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis delivered a sharp speech at the War Museum during an event for the Union of Retired Officers commemorating the anniversary of October 28, 1940. Karamanlis characterized the Libyan Parliament's ratification of the Turkey-Libya memorandum as a negative development for Greek national interests, describing it as a demonstration of power and an attempt to create fait accompli by Turkey.

He warned that Turkey is pursuing a comprehensive strategy to overturn the status quo in the Aegean, aiming to control the region up to the 25th parallel and acquire rights in the heart of the Aegean near Greek islands. Karamanlis specifically addressed the Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection project, stating that Greece must not seek permission or provide any form of notification to Turkey regarding the cable, as doing so would set a dangerous precedent that could prevent Greece from undertaking any future infrastructure projects in the Aegean without Turkish approval.

Furthermore, Karamanlis criticized the stance of international allies, accusing them of maintaining an equal distance between the 'aggressor and the victim' and failing to support Greek sovereignty effectively.
