Greece commemorates 122nd anniversary of the Macedonian Struggle
Greece is observing the 122nd anniversary of the Macedonian Struggle, commemorating the death of Pavlos Melas on October 13, 1904. Various ceremonies and educational events have taken place across the country to honor the historical figures and local citizens who fought for Greek identity in the region.
In Athens, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias issued a statement emphasizing the duty to preserve historical truth against falsification. In Florina, ceremonies included a memorial service at the Holy Metropolitan Church of Agios Panteleimon and wreath-laying at the George Modi Square monument. Serres hosted a ceremony at the Orfeas Club to honor both the Macedonian fighters and victims of the Bulgarian occupation (1917–1918).
In Edessa, students at the 2nd General Lyceum held an event highlighting the role of the “Invisible Fighters”—local citizens who acted as a secret intelligence and supply network. The commemorations also noted the contributions of figures such as Metropolitan German Karavangelis of Kastoria and local leaders who supported the struggle during the Ottoman administration.
