Greece commemorates World Blood Donor Day with nationwide donation drives

On 14 June, the World Health Organization marked World Blood Donor Day, urging voluntary blood donations to support patients needing surgery, cancer treatment, chronic‑illness care and emergency transfusions. In Greece, the 5th Health Region of Thessaly and the Metropolitan of Paramythia organised blood‑collection campaigns in local hospitals and three historic Orthodox churches – Agios Pantaleimon, Agios Spyridon and Agios Konstantinos‑Eleni – emphasizing the life‑saving impact of a single donation.

Authorities highlighted that the national blood supply depends on regular donations from healthy adults aged 18‑60, encouraging donors to give two to three times a year. The campaigns also noted the role of plasma fractionation in producing pharmaceutical products. The events aim to raise public awareness of the ongoing need for safe, sufficient blood reserves across the country.
