Greece prepares for national celebrations of October 28th anniversary

Various municipalities and educational institutions across Greece are organizing commemorative events to mark the anniversary of the October 28, 1940, national holiday. The celebrations, scheduled for late October 2026, include flag-raising ceremonies, religious services, wreath-laying at war memorials, and student parades.

In cities such as Messolonghi, Kilkis, Agrinio, and Orestiada, programs feature official doxologies, speeches, and military or student processions. Many regions have also announced periods of flag-flying and the illumination of public buildings. In Thessaloniki, preparations are underway for a major military parade, which is expected to showcase modern weaponry and new technological units, including the arrival of the Belharra frigate ‘Kimōn’.

Educational authorities have provided guidance regarding school celebrations. While October 28th is a national holiday with schools closed, commemorative school events are typically held on Tuesday, October 27th. These school activities include theatrical performances, poetry readings, and historical presentations, though regular lessons are suspended during these periods.
