Greece considers 1 billion euro package for pensioners and businesses

The Greek government is considering a financial assistance package exceeding 1 billion euros to support pensioners, families, self-employed professionals, and small businesses. This planning is being finalized ahead of the Economic Forum, with measures intended to extend beyond 2027.

Regarding pensioners, discussions are underway to potentially increase the annual assistance from the legislated 300 euros to 350 or 400 euros. While the 300-euro amount is already a statutory benefit with expanded income and asset thresholds, eligibility remains constrained by age requirements. To receive the 2026 payment, beneficiaries must have reached the age of 65 by December 31, 2025. This criterion is estimated to exclude approximately 473,700 retirees who, despite having low incomes, do not meet the age threshold. An exception exists for survivors' pensions, where the age requirement may be lowered to 60 under specific conditions.

While there is debate regarding increased annual bonuses, officials have indicated there is currently insufficient fiscal space to implement a full 13th pension payment. The broader economic plan aims to address the cost of living and provide long-term support for the middle class and small enterprises.
