Greece considers additional subsidies for fishermen amid ongoing protests
Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food, Margaritis Schoinas, has announced that the government is considering additional support measures for Greek fishermen to combat rising fuel costs. Following discussions with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the government is evaluating an increase in diesel subsidies and the potential reallocation of funds to assist with net damages caused by the energy crisis.
Fishermen are currently seeking a subsidy increase of approximately 50 to 55 cents per liter, arguing that previous announcements of a 32-cent increase are insufficient. While specific amounts have not yet been finalized, Schoinas stated that formal announcements regarding costed measures are expected next week.
The protests, which have entered their ninth day, have led to fishing vessels remaining docked and fish markets facing shortages, with much of the available supply consisting of frozen or farmed fish. Fishermen are scheduled to meet via teleconference to decide the future course of their demonstrations following recent meetings with government officials.
