Greece considers extension of mandatory bank transfers for rent

A decision regarding the potential extension of the mandatory requirement to pay rents via bank transfers is expected in the coming days, possibly by September 14, 2026. The measure, originally slated for implementation on October 1 of this year, faces delays due to the slow activation of the Real Estate Ownership and Management Registry (MIDA).

Without the functioning of MIDA, the mandatory banking payment measure cannot be effectively applied, as the registry is necessary to declare and cross-reference the bank accounts used for rent collection.

In a letter to the Ministry of National Economy and Finance and the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), POMIDA requested a legislative extension of at least six months from the date MIDA becomes operational. POMIDA emphasized that the ability to monitor monthly bank transfers is inextricably linked to the information declared on the new MIDA platform. Additionally, the organization has proposed exemptions from sanctions for monthly rents under 500 euros and for rental agreements between individuals over the age of 70.
