Greece considers increasing tax-free meal voucher limit to 10 euros

The Greek government is considering increasing the daily limit for tax-free meal vouchers from 6 to 10 euros, a change that would not occur for the first time in 22 years. This proposal follows requests from social partners to help workers cope with rising food costs.

Under the current system, the daily tax-free limit is 6 euros, totaling approximately 132 euros per month based on 22 working days. If the increase to 10 euros is implemented, the monthly tax-free value would rise to 220 euros, potentially exceeding 2,500 euros annually. For employees, these vouchers act as a tax-free bonus that boosts disposable income. For businesses, the expense remains tax-deductible and is exempt from social security contributions, provided the 10-euro daily limit is not exceeded.

Research from IME GSVEE indicates that one in four employees in Greece currently receives meal vouchers or cards on a regular or occasional basis. The government's move aims to provide both relief to workers and greater flexibility for companies to offer additional benefits.
