Greece considers moving Patriot missiles to Souda Bay amid Iranian threat reports

The Greek Ministry of National Defense is considering the transfer of a Patriot missile battery from Karpathos to the Souda Bay military base in Crete. This potential move follows reports from the Financial Times suggesting that Iran may consider strikes against American targets in Europe, specifically in Southeast Europe, if military tensions with the United States escalate.

Potential Iranian targets mentioned in reports include Bulgaria and Cyprus. In response to these security concerns, Greece is monitoring the situation closely. While no decision has been made regarding the deployment of Patriot systems to Bulgaria, the Greek Government National Security Council will evaluate any official request for assistance from Sofia.

Currently, Greek military assets, including four F-16 fighter jets and the frigate Nikiforos Fokas, remain deployed in Cyprus as part of existing security frameworks. Experts, such as those from the Royal United Services Institute, have characterized the threat from Iranian ballistic missiles to European targets as 'real, but limited' due to the technical challenges of long-distance strikes.
