Greece prepares energy support measures amid rising fuel costs
The Greek government is preparing a package of support measures to mitigate the impact of rising energy and fuel costs on households and businesses. Following high-level meetings at the Maximos Mansion, officials are monitoring the surge in international energy prices, including Brent crude oil exceeding 105 dollars per barrel and natural gas prices remaining high.
Key considerations for the upcoming measures, expected to be finalized in late September or early October, include the potential reintroduction of a Fuel Pass based on income and asset criteria, the extension of diesel subsidies, and increased heating subsidies. The government is also evaluating interventions for electricity bills to curb rising costs.
Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis noted that the country maintains fiscal reserves, estimated between 130 and 150 million euros, to absorb economic shocks. The administration aims to balance social support with fiscal stability, particularly ahead of the heating oil season starting October 15, when prices are projected to be significantly higher than last year.
