Greece: Pensioners challenge Solidarity Contribution in Court of Audit

Greek pensioners and opposition members are challenging the Solidarity Contribution (EAS), a levy established in 2010 that affects approximately 440,000 individuals. Legal experts have characterized the contribution as unequal and unconstitutional, noting that it is calculated on the original pension amount rather than the actual amount paid after previous cuts.

A pilot case is scheduled for October 7, 2026, at the Court of Audit. There is a positive recommendation from the Commissioner to calculate the EAS proportionally through brackets rather than as a flat percentage of the total amount. If adopted, this change could reduce the contribution by 50%, potentially saving some pensioners up to 671 euros per year.

Since its inception, the EAS has cost pensioners an estimated 10 billion euros. For the 2026 budget year alone, it is projected that over 400,000 pensioners or their heirs will lose a total of 888 million euros due to the current calculation methods.
