Greece considers visitor limits for Crete's Balos Beach

Greek authorities are considering strict measures to manage tourist flows at the iconic Balos Beach in northwest Crete. The move follows viral social media footage showing massive crowds gathered around the lagoon and quay. While local residents noted that such congestion often reflects peak moments during boat arrivals rather than the constant state of the beach, the influx remains a concern.

Local officials in Kissamos are exploring solutions for Balos, Elafonisi, and Falassarna, which currently receive between 4,000 and 5,000 visitors daily. Proposed measures include mandatory online reservations with specific time slots and the implementation of daily visitor caps. An action plan is expected to be finalized before the 2027 summer season.

Similar overtourism challenges are being reported in Santorini, particularly in Oia. The surge in visitors is attributed to social media popularity and large numbers of cruise ship passengers arriving simultaneously. Experts suggest that travelers visit less popular areas and choose quieter days, such as Sundays, to mitigate the impact of peak crowds.
