Greece considers withdrawing ban on cash for courier deliveries
A proposed regulation by the Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance that would mandate electronic payments for all courier deliveries is facing significant opposition. The draft legislation aims to boost digital payments and improve the electronic recording of e-commerce transactions. Under the proposal, courier companies accepting cash could face fines amounting to double the value of the transaction.
Industry representatives and the Athens Chamber of Commerce have raised concerns regarding unfair competition between physical and electronic commerce. Critics argue that while physical stores retain the right to accept cash, online retailers would face an additional burden. Due to these objections and the resulting uncertainty for thousands of merchants, the Ministry is reviewing the measure, and there is a possibility that the regulation may be withdrawn or significantly modified before reaching Parliament.
