Greece considers withdrawing ban on courier cash payments
The Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance is reportedly considering the withdrawal of a controversial provision that would have mandated electronic payments for all cash-on-delivery (COD) transactions made via courier services.
The proposed regulation, which was under public consultation, sought to require customers to pay via card or e-banking regardless of the transaction amount. This would have effectively banned the use of physical cash for courier deliveries, even for very small purchases. Under the original plan, courier companies accepting cash would have faced fines equal to double the transaction value.
The move faced significant backlash from consumers and businesses due to perceived inequalities. Critics pointed out that while physical stores allow cash payments for transactions up to 500 euros, the new rule would have forced electronic payments for the exact same products if ordered online. Concerns were also raised regarding accessibility for elderly citizens, residents in remote areas, and those without bank cards, as well as potential technical issues with POS terminals in areas with poor signal.
