Greece consumer alert: New cash on delivery package scam identified
A new fraudulent scheme involving fake packages and cash on delivery (COD) payments has been identified in Greece. The scam involves scammers sending packages that appear legitimate to unsuspecting consumers to collect payments.
Presenter Katerina Zarifi revealed the tactic after a relative fell victim to the fraud. The relative ordered clothing from abroad and selected the COD option. A legitimate courier delivered a package and collected 47 euros, but upon opening it, the recipient found an incorrect item instead of the ordered clothing. The original order arrived correctly several days later.
Investigations showed that the delivery person and the shipping documents were authentic, and the tracking code functioned normally within the courier company's system, making the scam highly difficult to detect. There are ongoing questions regarding how scammers obtain personal data from electronic shoppers to organize these fraudulent shipments.
