Greece: Convicted killer appeals life sentence in Garifallia Psarakou murder case

The individual convicted of murdering Garifallia Psarakou in Folegandros during the summer of 2021 has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court. The perpetrator, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by both the first-instance court and the Syros Mixed Appeal Court, is seeking a reduction in his sentence.

In his appeal, the defendant has cited several mitigating factors, including reduced culpability, a sudden impulse of mental passion, and remorse. However, the Syros Mixed Appeal Court unanimously rejected these claims. The family's lawyer, Alexis Mavraidis, stated that the defendant is attempting to overturn the life sentence to secure more favorable treatment.

Alexandra Makou, the mother of the victim, expressed profound anger and distress regarding the legal move. She stated that the perpetrator has shown no genuine remorse and is acting solely to avoid long-term imprisonment. She emphasized that true repentance should be demonstrated through actions rather than words.
