Greece coordinates damage assessments following severe flooding
Authorities in Greece are coordinating efforts to assess damage and provide relief following severe weather and flooding that occurred between October 1 and October 3, 2026.
In Heraklion, Mayor Alexis Kalokairinos held a meeting to organize the recording of damages to both municipal infrastructure and private property. The municipality has declared a state of emergency in affected areas and is preparing files for relevant ministries to facilitate compensation and public infrastructure repairs. Technical services have been instructed to prioritize inspections of road and agricultural networks.
In other regions, including the municipalities of Ierapetra and Mylopotamos, inspections are underway. In the Ierapetra municipality, specifically the Agios Ioannis community, 20 inspections have been conducted, resulting in 18 buildings being classified as green (safe), with two classified as red (unsafe). In the Mylopotamos municipality, across the communities of Axou, Venio, and Zoniana, 60 inspections have been performed, with 57 buildings deemed safe, one yellow (restricted access), and two red.
