Council of State cancels licenses for three private universities in Greece
The Council of State (StE) has canceled the operating licenses and all study programs for three private university branches in Greece: CITY College University of York, Keele University, and Anatolia College. The court's decision identified several administrative and procedural failures.
Specific reasons for the cancellations include the failure of the EOPPEP to verify compliance regarding building facility inspections and the involvement of a committee member with a relationship to one of the institutions during the HAEAE evaluation process. Additionally, the court found that certain study program certifications lacked specific quantitative and qualitative criteria.
The Ministry of Education responded by stating that the decision does not challenge the constitutionality of the legal framework for private universities (Law 5094/2024), but rather addresses specific administrative implementation issues. The Ministry assured students and families that the academic year will not be lost and that necessary steps will be taken to ensure compliance with the court's rulings.
