Greece Court of Audit to rule on pensioners' solidarity contribution
The Plenary of the Court of Audit is scheduled to rule on October 7 regarding the Pensioners' Solidarity Contribution (EAS) in Greece. This judicial decision could fundamentally alter how the contribution is calculated for more than 400,000 pensioners.
Currently, the EAS is applied to main pensions exceeding 1,468 euros, with rates ranging from 3% to 14% depending on the amount. A central legal issue is that the contribution is calculated based on the total pension amount once the threshold is crossed, rather than only on the portion that exceeds the limit. A similar contribution, with rates between 3% and 10%, also applies to supplementary pensions.
A ruling in favor of the pensioner who challenged the legality of this method could lead to changes in future deductions and potentially open the door for mass claims for retroactive payments. The Greek economic team has already acknowledged the problematic nature of the current calculation method and is preparing various scenarios for potential changes.
